Herde zu Hartward

Farms J1 and J4 seem to have formed a common unit of old Hartward (and J5 probably was split from J4), with J2 and J3 representing the other half of the village. If there are still any family links among the owners of the parcels at the start of the Weinkauf record, they are not obvious. J1 and J4, the northern farms of Hartward, very possibly were once part of a larger section of land that stretched further up toward Ostbense.

The homes of the Hartward farmers probably were in the center of Hartward, rather than out among the fields.

Herd *1* (J1)

Herd, 42 3/4 Dt M

Along with the primary fields, checkerboarded in with the fields of other Hartward land owners, this farm includes some more remote fields, slivers of land that might have been acquired later for specific purposes or through marriage or other family connections.

Herd J1 does not pay a Weinkauf to the sovereign until 1638. This suggests that the Herd is not owned by the Graf. By the 17th century, the Landesherrschaft was collecting Weinkaufs from all properties, whether owned by the Graf or not, but in the early days of the Weinkauf, it was paid to the actual owner of the property. (See “The Weinkauf in the Harlingerland.”) As early as 1556, the land is listed as Heuerland, so it is probably all rented from the actual owner, whose identity remains unclear.

See also Seriem Herd *C11*: In 1670, Edo Frerichs owns ±35 Dt in Lütke Holum (Oyke Hayen itzo Edo Frerichs). The owner of Hartward Herd *J1* at that time is Frerich Eden. This may be the father of Edo Frerichs.

After the Weinkauf is paid in 1638, another is not paid (or at least recorded) until 1719.

1556: 41 Dt und 1 C2 Mh

1570: No losses recorded in All Saints Flood

1600: 42 1/2 Dt und 1 C2 Mh

1632: 42 3/4 Dt

Frerich Eden indicates that the posthumous only son of his deceased brother Here Eden of Hartward has died. Yearly rent was 10 3/4 guilders. He desires that the next heir should pay the Weinkauf for himself. Thus he wishes that the farm might be “weinkaufed” to his son Otto Frerichs. The Weinkauf is 35 Reichsthaler, to be paid in three installments of 11 Rt 18 Sch each: one now, one in 1643, and one in 1644.

Regemort lists parcel ownership as Frerich Eden itzo Frerich Otten except when noted otherwise.

Herd *2* (J2)

Herd, 51 1/4 Dt M

The size of this farm is given consistently as 51 1/4 Diemat. But the parcels, put together, add up to 29 Diemat. This farm is missing 22 Diemat.

Total: 29.4 Dt (25,39,123 = 27,11,03)

Regemort lists parcel ownership as Helmerich Ommen except when noted otherwise.

Herd *3* (J3)

voller Herd, 36 1/2 Dt M

The size of this farm is given consistently as 36 1/2 Diemat. But the parcels, put together, add up to 45 Diemat. This farm has an extra 9 Diemat.

1556: Folckert Eden is the farmer of record. 36 Dt Mh

1570: All Saints Flood. The farmer, Schetcke, lost considerable livestock.

28 July 1581: Curious note: + Schetke Hansken. Die Witwe soll 6 Jahre bei den Kindern bleiben, dann soll das Land auf ein Kind vwk werden. Si gibt zur Vg. 15 Tl.
Schetke Hansken (the farmer) dies. The widow will remain 6 years with the children, then the land will be “Weinkaufed” to a child. She gives 15 Taler in Verehrung (essentially tip money to the Count’s staff). In other words, it appears she was not charged an actual Weinkauf.

Over the course of the years, the widow and the guardians have paid the Weinkauf, and let the farm be recorded to the eldest son, Karsten Schetcken, “as can be seen in the following Weinkauf book.”

1587 1588: Karsten, son of Schetcken Hanßken, owes a Weinkauf of 80 Taler. On 20 September he pays 20 Reichstaler, another 20 Rt on 23 November, another 20 Rt on 29 April 1588. “It’s all paid.” (But where is the final 20 Rt?)

1600: 36 1/2 Dt Mh

13 January 1619: Carsten Schetken dies. 36 1/2 Dt. He leaves 4 sons and 2 daughters. In 1587 the farm was Weinkaufed for 80 Rt. The son Schetke, who is 12 years old, gets the Weinkauf. His guardians—Haicke Aibe Grälfs, Here Haings of Marz, and Witke Schiuts—and his mother pay 80 Reichstaler, plus 2 Reichstaler “gift.”

1632: 36 1/2 Dt M

1658: 36 1/2 Dt M

1670: Regemort parcels BE 036, 043, 096, 098

Parcel sizes:

036: 17.50 Dt (17,13,21) (7 und 6.5 Dt aneinander belegen)
043: 8.92 Dt (8,08,05) (9 Dt an den Martzer wegh)
096: 17.34 Dt (17,04,16) (item 16 Dt in unterscheidtliche stücken aneinander etc.)
098: 1.87 Dt (1,14,29) (ein kleine camp an Frerich Otten)

Total: 45.63 Dt (43,39,71 = 46,02,11)

Regemort lists parcel ownership as Schetke Carstens except when noted otherwise.

Herd *4* (J4)

Voller Herd, 71 1/2 Dt M

Herd appears to be about 5 Dt bigger than what it pays taxes for. Some of the discrepancy could be measuring errors (ancient or modern).

1556: 14 Dt Me, 53 Dt Mh (67 Dt total)

1600: 71 1/2 Dt Mh

1670: Regemort parcels BE 034, 102, 104, 140, 151

Parcel sizes:

034: 9.32 Dt (9,06,03) (mit die platze)
102: 2.34 Dt (2,04,00) (0.5 Dt an den fuhrwegh)
104: 3.20 Dt (3,03,02) (3 Dt zu Sterbuhr)
140: 8.79 Dt (8,12,29) (6 Dt verwulfft an die Herren)
151: 53.01 Dt (51,01,02) (52.5 Dt in unterschiedliche stücken aneinander)

Total: 76.66 Dt (74,26,36 = 75,11,06)

Regemort lists parcel ownership as Ayebe Haicken except when noted otherwise.

Herd *5* (J5)

Voller Herd, 30 7/8 Dt M

This Herd is reported in the Weinkauf as 30 7/8 Dt, and the Regemort map and list show its size at approximately 32 Dt. Any discrepancy is probably a matter of minor measuring errors.

No Parcel 143 or 145 is drawn on the Regemort map.

Parcel 143 is not assigned by the Regemort list to any particular farm. The parcel does not show up in the list.

But 145 was probably intended to be used for the location of the house that is shown in the southeast corner of Parcel 144. As such, it would belong to this Weinkauf Herd, if it existed.

The Regemort list probably counts 144 as the house (0.5 Diemat), and 145 as the larger parcel (5+ Diemat), although the Regemort map identifies the larger parcel as 144 and does not distinguish the house as a separate parcel or identify it with a parcel number.

So 145 may be counted with the parcel marked 144, and 143 likely does not exist at all.

1556: 30 Mh

1600: 30 und 3 /12 Dt Mh

1670: Regemort parcels BE -, 039, 144, 145, 146, 152

Parcel sizes:

-: (no size listed) (und die warff)
039: 5.53 Dt (5,08,24) (mit die platze)
144: 8.21 Dt (0,06,12) (0.5 Dt an Helmerich Ommen belegen)
145: - Dt (5,12,21) (6 Dt hingsteham an Ayebe Haicken)
146: 11.04 Dt (9,15,12) (4, 3, und 2 Dt an Ueve Heeren)
146: - Dt (1,01,22) (Frerich Eden mit Algerdt Volkers mandelich)
(Regemort splits BE 146 between J1 and J5 in the index, but shows it on the map as a single parcel)
152: 7.90 Dt (11,09,29) (8 Dt an Ayebe Haicken)

Total: 32.68 Dt (30,50,98 = 33,05,08)

Regemort lists parcel ownership as Algerdt Folkers itzo Folckert Algers except when noted otherwise.

Notes

Regemort units: 1 Diemat = 16 of the second unit
1 of the second unit = 30 of the third unit
